Oathtaker Reviews
Literary Classics 5-Star Review and Seal of Approval and Gold Medal Winner:
Oathtaker, the first book in a series by Patricia Reding, is the refreshingly unique novel about Mara, a trained Oathtaker living in the land of Oosa. The sacrifices made by Oathtakers are great, but those sworn to fulfill the task have willingly accepted the burden of their responsibilities. Oosa, a world full of rich traditions and powerful legends, is the setting for this fantasy fiction novel of epic proportions in which ancient prophecies are revealed and good wages war upon evil. This highly engaging book boats a robust plot paired with a healthy share of life and death struggles and a delightful love story woven throughout.
In this adventure-filled tale, Reding incorporates devious characters and charming heroes, cunningly beautiful ladies, and enchanted buildings. Each character is distinctive, believable and well developed. We loved the story, the flow, the excitement, and can’t wait for the next book in what promises to be a great series.
Oathtaker comes highly recommended and has earned the Literary Classics Seal of Approval.

Adult and young adult Harry Potter fans, stand up and take notice of Oathtaker by Patricia Reding. There's a new girl in town and her name is Mara. She's an Oathtaker, which means she is sworn for life to protect one of the Select. Following a gradual deterioration in human values and morals, the Good One, Ehyeh, selected a group of people to carry on the positive principles of humanity. In order that the Select may survive and prosper, the Good One also selected Oathtakers to protect the Select at all costs, including death. Despite the Oathtakers’ efforts, the Select are becoming rarer while evil and indifference are becoming more pronounced. But there is hope in the form of the seventh daughter, Rowena, of the first family of Shimeron. Mara is called to be the Oathtaker to Rowena's newborn twins, Reigna and Eden. Reigna is the promised "seventh seventh," while Eden is called "she who is but is not." With her dying breath, Rowena passes her powers to her helpless twins. Mara comes to understand that the twins are in danger from Rowena's older sister Lillith, who will stop at nothing to become the powerful head of the first family of the Select. While Mara struggles to keep the twins safe, she assembles an army of those willing to protect the babies from Lillith's evil clutches. Lillith's scheme is so horrible that she is willing to . . . (Oh, I guess you will have to read to find out.)
Oathtaker is brilliantly conceptualized so that sequels will be a natural progression to the book. Reding's characterizations are marvelous. You cannot help but idolize the Oathtaker, Mara, and when her story is fully revealed, she becomes even more the heroine. But Mara is not alone in her quest to protect the royal twins. She has Dixon, another Oathtaker, who at first is presented as her enemy, but then becomes much more than an adversary. Ted, Faith, Nina, Lucy and a member of the first family all rise to the call to assist the young infants. Each is steadfast in bravery and willingness to sacrifice in the name of justice. But it seems that the evil Lillith will have her way, despite the heroic "army" of loyal followers who accumulate along the way. Oathtaker is a complex and thrilling story that will mesmerize readers and stir the imagination with untold depths of intrigue, loyalty, excitement and resolve. Teens and adults will be spellbound by the lovable and evil characters and they will want to jump right into the pages, put on their cloaks, and journey with Reigna and Eden as they struggle to take their rightful place in history.

Oathtaker by Patricia Reding is a book about courage, loss, decisions, friendship, love, and adventures. But above all, it is a story about dedication. Mara, a young Oathtaker, never had a charge before: each Oathtaker is trained to be the guardian of a Select, one of the chosen ones. When Mara follows her call to find her Select, she is presented with more than she ever expected. Her charge is quite special, but so is the danger that comes with becoming a dedicated Oathtaker. She is also confronted with Dixon, whose charge died in childbirth - and left Mara with the responsibility to look after her offspring, a seventh seventh (and a surprise), a very special Select. Dixon also dedicated his life to the protection of the offspring and to Mara. Their path is not an easy one, but step by step they find more support, but also more darkness.
Be warned: when you start reading Oathtaker by Patricia Reding, you better have quite a bit of spare time on your hands because it's really hard to stop once you get to know the different interesting characters. Some are charming (or think they are), others are simply lovable and cute, and then there are the ones that make you wish that they do not get a happy ending at all. I loved the fact that Oathtaker was not a short book. I enjoyed it so much and was happy when I saw that I wasn't that close to the end yet. And I will definitely read the other books in the series once they come out. It’s the kind of book that draws you in and makes you care about the characters and the world they are living in.

Oathtaker by Patricia Reding starts off with a bang when Mara discovers a pack of vicious hell-hounds from the underworld trying to break into a cabin and attack the woman inside. Even though she manages to kill the pack of hell-hounds, she still arrives too late to save the woman, Rowena, from a difficult pregnancy. Mara soon finds herself the protector of newborn twins. But Reigna and Eden aren't just any twins; part of a seventh pregnancy to a woman who was a seventh-born child herself, they are the 'seventh seventh and she who is but is not.' They are heralded in ancient prophecy as those who will bring about great change and rebirth to the land of Oosa. Now Mara must get all the help she can to protect the twins from those that wish them great harm, namely from Lilith, Rowena's power-driven older sister.
I enjoyed Oathtaker very much. It draws you in straight from the beginning and, while there's tons of action, Reding doesn't let that get in the way of character growth. Mara is a well written, capable main character, who is believable as well as likable. I found myself rooting for Mara throughout her journey. The world Reding has created is very interesting and many readers will probably see parallels with our own world in the lore and society of Oosa. The bad guys in Oathtaker are worthy of every boo, hiss, and rotten tomato, especially Lilith who, true to her name's biblical origins, is very, very bad. A great read for anyone looking for good, clean fantasy.

Magic, monsters, intrigues, and love fill the pages of Oathtaker by Patricia Reding. A young Oathtaker stumbles across a horrific scene and is called to take responsibility for the lives of two baby girls destined for greatness. As this young woman, Mara, is pursued by those who want to prevent the babies from fulfilling their rightful destiny, others are drawn to the girls and pledge their allegiance. As this army grows, various talents and backgrounds come together to provide the magic needed to allow Mara and her fellow Oathtakers to identify the threat and prepare to fight against it. Mara, with the support of another Oathtaker, Dixon, is led to the ultimate battle in which the lives of the girls hang in the balance. The question is whether she is strong enough to defeat pure evil.
Patricia Reding has created a wonderful tale of love, devotion, and desperation in Oathtaker. In the almost fairy tale world of Oosa, a wicked member of the leading family plots the deaths of those who stand in the way of her becoming the ultimate ruler. With tremendous depth and creativity, Oathtaker becomes real and the emotions and trials of the characters are felt stronger and deeper as the story proceeds.
Secrets and surprises keep the action moving and hope that good will triumph over evil grows as the true nature of some of the players is revealed. A well outlined philosophy and the dedication of its believers to fulfill a prophecy, create a story of courage worthy of the designation of a classic.

Step into the magical land of Oosa. Patricia Reding, in Oathtaker, describes fierce battles, brave promises, palace intrigues, mysterious forests, and a romantic union. Mara and Dixon are suddenly drawn together to fight a common cause. They are both Oathtakers who pledge to guard the Select people. God is known as Ehyeh or the Good One. Ehyeh names his Select people who are the most favored. Mara has magical powers as a young warrior. She has the power of the Spira which is a lethal blade. She slays a pack of hellish, stinking wolves known as gruts to protect the vulnerable Rowena who is about to give birth in a humble hut. Two heavenly and sweet-smelling girls are born safely. Reigna and Eden have the promise of destiny. They will reign in the seven provinces of Oosa if they are allowed to survive....
Then the journey and the battle begins to protect these small, precious bundles. The military leader Garon pursues them and the power-hungry Lilith kidnaps them. Mara takes a self-sacrificing oath for her charge. She vows to protect these girls even if she should lose her life. Oathtaker by Patricia Reding is the start to a series of novels. There is a spiritual symbolism to the novel which gives it a deeper meaning. Some dialogue and descriptions are repetitive but this does not take away from the novel's impressive creativity. The fantastic way that the sky, the clouds, and the world itself reacts to events draws the reader in. The author follows her own admonition to "always aim high."

A good book captures your attention and holds it. You can lay it down but you look forward to picking it up again. An excellent book holds you captive from beginning to end; it is impossible to lay an excellent book down. It draws you into the plot, forcing you to live the words that wrap themselves around your emotions until you become one with the main character. Oathtaker is such a book. From the first page, Oathtaker, by Patricia Reding, promises to take the reader on an epic journey that she will long remember. The reader is tantalized by a sense of fear when she meets the grut, a sense of loyalty and honor from the Oathtaker, Mara, and a sense of untold adventure that lies ahead.
An Oathtaker is a volunteer, willing to “undergo rigorous training…and swear a life oath for the protection of his charge.” An Oathtaker is given three weapons: a blade infused with magic, attendant magic, and “continued youth.” The story begins when Mara hears the relentless screaming of the grut, beasts that look a bit like wolves but are much taller, with three rows of teeth curved inward, and that emit the stench of death. Just a touch from a grut would be certain death. There were thirteen of the wicked beasts surrounding a small hut. Inside, Mara found her charge, but she had little idea just how special that charge was.
Oh, what an enticing beginning! To share more in this review would be cheating other readers from the thrill of discovery. Patricia Reding is an exceptionally talented author. Her imagination must be huge to create such strong characters. Of course my favorite was Mara, who exhibited strength and the wisdom to know she had much to learn. I find it difficult to believe this is the author’s first book. She writes with the talent of a seasoned author and yet her plot is refreshing in a world of stale ideas. In the words of Oliver Twist: "More Please!”

Oathtaker is a beautiful and fantastic epic adventure filled with all the things I love most – a captivating storyline, edge-of-your-seat suspense, thought-provoking characters, and never-ending twists and turns. I would enthusiastically recommend this story to fans of Lord of the Rings. They would truly appreciate all of the subtleties of the plot, the richness of the characters, and the complexity of the overall story itself. Honestly, anyone who enjoys such hearty stories would find this book truly compelling and extremely satisfying.
We are drawn into a world where those who swear to protect the lives of a small group of people called Select are known as Oathtakers. They take their job with the utmost sincerity and gravity in light of all that their vows entail. An Oathtaker who reneges on their vow is seen as disgraced, so when a new Oathtaker named Mara stumbles upon her first charge she is in no way prepared for how it would completely change her life and the consequences she will face as a result of answering the call.
While Mara is armed with her formidable Oathtaker’s blade to aid her in her journey, she soon learns how lacking her store of weapons are when she discovers that her charge is more special than she could ever have imagined. Thankfully, with this added burden and responsibility, Mara is mercifully granted all of the resources needed to fulfill her task. Those resources serve to both lighten her burden as well as to test her resolve in keeping her vow.
I was immediately drawn in by the character of Mara because she knew she would be given the strength to step out and fulfill her arduous and wonderful task, but she lacked the courage at first. I find myself at times lacking the courage to step up and take what I know is mine out of fear of failure. Mara’s lack of self-confidence is found in my own heart, but I am hopeful that I will learn to develop the same confidence and courage that Mara discovered had lived within her own heart all along.
Patricia Reding has created a wonderfully, enjoyable story filled with a spectacular array of characters that are so rich and vivid that you will wonder if you can still hear them talking to you even after you have finished reading this book. I hope that your heart will be just as captivated as mine was as you partake in this thrilling journey. Patricia Reding is a marvelous new author that you simply have to discover for yourself!

Coming of age is a struggle for all. But, to do so as someone meant to fulfill a prophecy is challenging beyond comprehension. The 7th born daughter of a 7th born mother, along with her twin “the one who is, but isn’t,” face a great calling in this enchanting novel in which ancient prophecies are realized. The girls must triumph over evil while facing possible death to complete the destiny which has been foretold. They struggle with becoming young women while also fighting evil forces bent upon destroying their homeland and its inhabitants.
Author Patricia Reding thrills and delights readers with elements of excitement and adventure in a world where magic abounds. Twenty years have passed since Mara took on the responsibility of Oathtaker to the twins, Reigna and Eden, who are expected to usher in a new age for Oosa. Select, Volume 2 of The Oathtaker Series, by Patricia Reding, follows Mara, Dixon, the twins, and all the others who have sworn to protect them as they combat the evil that grows in Chiran, a neighboring empire. Unfortunately, Mara suffers a severe injury that leaves her with no memory of her position as guardian to the twins or even of her marriage to Dixon. While Dixon removes her from the compound to keep her memory loss a secret, the twins exert their independence, fighting Lucy every step of the way. Lucy founded the compound for the sole purpose of keeping safe, the girls and other members of the Select, along with their Oathtakers. Now she must carefully weigh the options for the twins' safety as well as their development into the leaders who are spoken of in ancient prophecy. With Emperor Zarek of Chiran making bolder incursions into Oosa, will the twins come into their powers in time to save their homeland and will Mara’s memory return so that she can fulfill her oath?
Select includes an excellent summary of Volume One, Oathtaker, which provides all the information you need to refresh your memory, or even to get you into the story of Mara, Dixon and the twins in Select, Volume 2 of The Oathtaker Series, by Patricia Reding. With a need for urgency, the plot develops quickly as all the elements of the world of Oosa are set in motion to protect against the spread of evil. The characters are well developed and quite realistic with plenty of emotional ups and downs, doubts and dilemmas. A fine balance is depicted between the need for self sufficiency and the benefits of team work, and the concept of power, good and bad, is an important issue. This is an excellent story that is part of an epic fantasy well worth reading. Another winner! I love it and can't wait for more!

Select by Patricia Reding is the second book in the fantasy series Oathtaker. In this part of the series, the reader joins Mara and her companions many years after the events of the first novel. New readers or previous readers who need a refresher can read a summary of the first book in the back of the second one. I would recommend to read the first book first though - you won't regret it.
In the beginning of the second book, Mara is injured and taken back to safety by Dixon and the other Oathtakers. When Mara wakes up, however, she cannot remember anything about the last two decades (or so). She does not remember who Dixon is, or who her two charges are. Dixon and some of the others decide that it would be best to take Mara on the road, away from her charges and inquiring minds - so that Mara would not be removed as an Oathtaker, and would have a chance to somehow regain her memories. While Dixon manages to follow through with the plan, nobody expected that the two charges - the twin sisters from the prophecy - would get it into their heads that they also finally needed to experience the world if they were to grow into true leaders.
Select by Patricia Reding was just as well written as the first book in the series, and I enjoyed every single page. Once more, the characters immediately grabbed you (or made you want to slap them), and the world pulled you in. It is a great book to escape to after a day of work (or study). The flow of the plot is close to perfect, and the settings and scenes are beautifully described in a language that uses neither too little nor too much of anything.

In Select, the second book in The Oathtaker Series by Patricia Reding, Mara, an Oathtaker to the ranking twin members of the Select, suffers a head injury, leaving her with no memory of her charges. As Dixon tries to help her regain her memories, her charges, Reigna and Eden, twin daughters of an ancient prophecy, decide to go on a coming of age journey seeking to determine their callings. But evil forces set out to destroy the twins and the prophecy as they journey across The Tearless where they will face three challenges. Meanwhile, their allies disperse in response to the growing threat from an oppressive empire intent on destroying their homeland.
Reding has done it again. Though Select, the second book in The Oathtaker trilogy, is set 20 years after the first, it loses none of the intrigue. Even though Lilith is gone, the threat to the twins' lives still remains, and Regina and Eden realize that they need to become independent leaders if they ever wish to have a chance of fulfilling their destinies. In a book filled with descriptive, colorful writing and helmed by good moral characters, Reding shines in her world-building and her interesting and dynamic characters. While I enjoyed Select almost as much as Oathtaker, there were times when I felt the action and intrigue got slowed down a little by backstory and, while I still loved Mara, I had trouble connecting with her charges, Reigna and Eden, especially in the beginning of the story. Despite it all, Select by Patricia Reding is a great sequel and I'm looking forward to more by this author.

Select is a masterful continuation of a truly breathtaking and inspiring journey into a magnificent world that blends mystery and magic with undeniable truth and unfailing love. This new story has allowed me to delve deeper into the lives of each precious and unforgettable character in order to develop a greater appreciation and respect for this impassioned and beautiful storyline. It has been such a huge pleasure to revisit not only the amazing characters but also the brilliance of their deeply detailed and thoroughly stunning world. This is an epic adventure that you will not want to miss out on!
Reigna and Eden have heard all of their lives that they are very special people. They have been tirelessly training in numerous areas of life and everyone around them has sworn their life to them for their safety above all. They understand these words, but they don’t truly appreciate their deeper meaning since they have lived such a sheltered life. They know enough about their history, but none of it is first hand and so it doesn’t feel necessarily real to them. Whey an undeniable pull comes upon them to leave the only home they have ever known to venture into the world in order to seek and earn their rightful place, they are understandably torn in two. When unforeseen circumstances prove to be a catalyst in pushing them toward their mysterious destiny, will they follow their heart and move forward into the unknown, or will they cower in fear and hide only to be confronted with a greater horror?
Without a doubt, I have come to fall in love with the wonderful characters that I have come to discover along this extraordinary journey. This part of the journey gave me greater insight to my favorite characters while allowing me to appreciate those that I only just met the first time around. Each represents a part of a whole that if not fulfilled would leave them all extremely vulnerable. No person is less important than another for we all have our own unique and precious gifts. To see just how well this story mirrors real life is actually very frightening at times. We should take the invaluable truths from these pages and learn to open our eyes and our mind and our heart to what the Good One would tell us, show us, and teach us along our own life journey. What a truly spectacular life we would have and what an incredible impact we would have to His plan!
Patricia Reding has proven without a doubt that she has been gifted an absolutely extraordinary talent that she has lovingly and passionately nurtured. Her words will instantly transport you to a world beyond your imagination that will challenge your senses, your mind, and above all your heart. There is so much more going on than a mere journey being unfolded before your eyes. There are truths both hidden and obvious that show themselves to you in the hopes that you will take them and live them every day of your life. This is a story that needs to be declared from the rooftops and the highest mountains. Truth that is shared becomes a blessing to both the giver and the receiver. Let us not fear to share that which our Good One asks us to share with those around us.

This is the 2nd book in the series (Oathtaker is the first in the series). We find that Mara who is the Oathtaker to the twins has lost her memory and she has forgotten who she is, why she is there at the compound and she doesn't remember those around her. As she sets off to go back home with her beloved Dixon (who she thinks is just going to take her home as her guide) she starts to remember bits and pieces of her life. During the time Mara and Dixon are away the twins, Eden and Reigna, decide to go on an adventure and all I am going to say is they had one heck of one and I wouldn't want to be them at all! The twins met someone who wants to help them while they are in the midst of troubles in their adventure but will they take it? What will happen to Mara? Will she ever get all her memory back and what will happen if she doesn't who will take charge of the twins?
This book has everything I was looking for...fantasy, mystery, love. I recommend this book and if I could give it more then 5 stars I would!!!!

I missed the two previous books in The Oathtaker Series by Patricia Reding, but Ephemeral and Fleeting tamed my heart and gave me a longing for more of this author’s work. Although this is the third volume in the thrilling epic fantasy, it reads beautifully as a standalone novel involving magic, supernatural powers, intrigue and betrayal, and the perennial war between good and evil. Readers are introduced to very interesting characters. Mara — and I love the sound of the name — is a gifted and wise woman with the ability to see into the future. She is responsible for Reigna and Eden, a set of magically gifted twins belonging to the first family of the Select. It’s because of their powers that they are moved to the City of Light where they undergo rigorous training with the Oathtaker forces who are dedicated to protecting the land from the evil Zarek, leader of the Chiran. When the twins under her charge are captured, Mara’s world comes crashing down. She discovers that she’s losing her own power and it’s just the beginning. Can they build up a strong enough resistance to stop the evil leader or could this be the end for them?
Ephemeral and Fleeting is a captivating tale, well developed in different layers and the author makes it irresistible with the masterful use of suspense which is built into the subplots. I was pulled into the story right from the very first page. The author doesn’t waste time in introducing the conflict to the reader and it escalates rapidly into a crisis. Readers who love extraordinary characters will adore Mara and the twins. Members of the Oathtaker forces are well thought-out, but it is the unforgiving villain that kept me turning the pages faster, just the way I did when I learned about Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter. From language to plot, to thematic and character development, Patricia Reding comes across as a master in the craft and the world she creates in this fantasy will certainly live in the minds of readers for a long time. It was a wonderful read and I will be looking forward to reading the entire series.

As the Oathtakers and the Select they guard are preparing to leave the compound that has been home and sanctuary for roughly two decades, a tragedy occurs that brings about some important revelations. In Ephemeral and Fleeting by Patricia Reding, Lucy, leader of the Council of Oosa, divulges secrets about the powers the twins possess in this third volume of The Oathtaker Series. Moving the Select twins, Reigna and Eden, as well as a group of Oathtakers back to the Palace of Shimeron is a daunting task, but even more obstacles quickly stand in their way. News of their movements are getting back to Zarek, Emperor of Chiran, who is plotting to destroy Oosa and all followers of Ehyeh, the Good One. Zarek continually builds his forces with even more evil soldiers, and his efforts to infiltrate Oosa with children who can stir up trouble and orphans who need care spread the resources of the Council and warriors dangerously thin. As the Oathtakers try to perform their own incursions into Chiran, more and more problems arise as they are overtaken as soon as they arrive. This throws the leaders into a panic, not knowing who is acting as a spy, and time is running short to come up with solutions. The darker things look for those sworn to protect the Select, the more prophecies and dreams seem to provide clues. The question is if they can be interpreted in time to act, and what other surprises lie in store.
Patricia Reding has come up with another excellent book in The Oathtaker Series that moves the plot along at a steady pace while still providing plenty of new twists and turns. A cast of characters and brief synopses of both Volumes One and Two provide great reminders for readers who may have been away from the series for a bit. Ephemeral and Fleeting delves even deeper into the emotions, desires, disappointments and backgrounds of the characters while maintaining great action and well devised strategy. These characters truly demonstrate what it means to be dedicated to a cause and how to work through the direst of circumstances to stay true to the goal. Another hit! I truly admire the depth of the plot and the characters and can't wait to see what happens! Patricia Reding takes the story to a natural end, leaving you breathless for the next volume to see how good versus evil will ultimately play out.

Ephemeral and Fleeting is the exciting third volume in Patricia Reding's Oathtaker series. Once more, readers will follow Mara, Dixon, and their charges from one adventure to the other. The group returns to the palace of the Select (not without problems) to train their forces to prepare them for the fight against Zarek, an evil leader. Unfortunately, there is a traitor amongst them. Mara and the twins are captured. Fortunately, there is a way for them to communicate - but getting help from the outside is unlikely. Dixon makes a rescue plan. Lucy tries to find the traitor, while also struggling with her emotions about a long-lost love that suddenly turned up in her life once more. In addition, the twins find out that they have unique gifts which give them the power over life and death - at a very high cost.
It had been a while since I read volume 1 and 2 of the series, but Ephemeral and Fleeting by Patricia Reding includes a summary of the plot if you need it. I didn't read the summary though, but still found it easy to dive right back into the world of Mara. Once more, the writing style makes it very easy for readers to be fully immersed in the fantasy world. You feel like you are returning to some friends you have not seen in a while - but the connection is still there and you just continue from where you left them. Mara and her friends have to go through some very difficult adventures, and they have to make some decisions that will have negative results, no matter what they do. Life and death, love and hate, peace and war: they always need to be balanced, and the ones who try to upset the balance will have to pay a price. Not only will this book entertain you for many hours, you will also get some lessons about life out of it. If you haven't read volume 1 and 2 already, I would recommend you to start there. Thanks to the summary you could forego this, but it would be an immense loss as the story is so well written! You wouldn't want to miss it if you love immersive fantasy novels!
